 Why "Synthesis"?

When I decided to start a training and consultancy business, I obviously wanted a name that reflected what my goal was.


Around this time, I was reading a biography of the late Douglas Adams (of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fame). A friend of his wrote about how in life Douglas had travelled from having a strong idea, to swinging to the total opposite idea before finding the middle ground.


It was described like this:


Firstly, we are taught things and we believe those things to be true - this is a Thesis


Then, we gain life experience and find that the things we believe are often not the way things work in the real world so we move away from them - this is the Antithesis.


As we mature and learn more, we eventually take the best from both sides and put it into practice - this is the Synthesis!


A bit more research I found the writings of Geog Hegel and dialectical reasoning. Hegel was the first person to put forward the above process as the way human knowledge moves forward.


So what has this got to do with naming the business??????


Well, the training programs I wanted to deliver took the basic theory of a subject and combined it with real world experience to give a great course that would have immediate, practical relevance for participants.


So, Synthesis we became!
